Weekly Benefice Update

Services and other events for this week beginning 13th November can be found on the This Week page by clicking here.   This page has other news and information about forthcoming events.

Go to their website
and search for
St John the Baptist Church – Somersham
Old Hurst Church
Then just follow the instructions.
There is no cost to you as a purchaser, but the Church you choose receives money for doing absolutely nothing.  If you are unsure of what to do, just ask Jenny Smith or Eddie Howlett at Somersham or Nicola Jarmaine at Old Hurst.

       St John’s Somersham

Scenes of Somersham Calendar for 2018 – these cost £5 and are now available to purchase from Eddie Howlett or on eBay.  Only 100 calendars have been printed, so make sure that you don’t miss out!

Christmas Quiz  John Sissons has produced a quiz about sweets and the winner will be announced in mid December. Quiz Sheets are now available to purchase from John or Jean Draper and cost £1.

Christmas Tree Festival – advance notice  Planning for this is underway and the event will take place on Saturday and Sunday 25th & 26th November in the Church. Help will be required with stewarding and refreshments and rotas will be available later in the month for volunteers to sign up. As we did last year we will have two Christmas hampers for the raffle and there will be a list at the back of the church of items that need to be donated in order to fill them.

Voices of Old Hurst  This inclusive community group will meet on Monday 6th and 20th for an hour from 7.30pm in St Peter’s for everyone who likes to sing.

Sunday Sing and Praise   “Sunday Sing and Praise” embraces a style of worship unlike any other in our benefice, appealing to those enjoying an informal and slightly unconventional approach to short punchy lay-led services with cake and coffee available throughout.  After July’s successful service it has been decided to continue trialling this for at least the next six months every 3rd Sunday at 10.30am.

Lead Theft

The Church Buildings Department at the Diocese has been contacted by PC Pete Mills of Cambridgeshire Police’s Rural Crime Action Team, who has asked them to contact all churches in relation to recent lead thefts from a number of churches within the Diocese. The thefts are significant, and have occurred at night over the last few weeks, and it is extremely likely that the thieves will continue to target churches in the area until the price of lead drops.

Please be vigilant and if you see any suspicious activity around any of the Churches in the Benefice please contact a churchwarden or you can contact the police generally on the following telephone numbers:

999 – for a crime in progress of suspicious activity potentially resulting in a crime

101 – for a crime that has occurred already and has just been discovered.

Do you use the Internet to shop for clothes, shoes, books etc?

If you do, why not become part of Easy Fundraising and help our Church.  It doesn’t cost you anything, but the company or store you buy from donates a small amount of money to your chosen organisation – St John the Baptist Somersham. Every penny they donate helps the church.

Find the web page and sign up.

We have received £17.66p without doing anything except signing up to the fundraising site and buying something on the internet.

If you want more information, or you are not sure what to do please speak to me.

Thank you.  Jenny Smith
