Children & Families

Children are welcome at all our services in all four churches in the Benefice. In Somersham there is a toddler group called “Little Acorns” which meets regularly. Further details are below together with information on our work with local schools.

Services

All our services welcome children of all ages and their families.  In Somersham Church there is a special carpeted area at the back of the church with toys and books and often an activity for chidren during the service.

Described below are services especially orientated towards families. They are shorter, more informal and may include crafts, activities and drama not to mention food. Hopefully there is something for everyone each week although depending where you live – you might have a few minutes drive!

Let’s Celebrate!

First Sunday of the month:

Family Service at Old Hurst Church – musical instruments for children, a craft table and an all age talk in this lovely, welcoming tiny church.

Breakfast Church in Somersham from 8.45am we offer a breakfast of Bacon Rolls, pasties or Croissants, coffee, tea and juice and sitting around the tables at the back of the church we offer a flexible and informal service.  This often makes use of drama and visual aids, and features more modern songs and hymns. This may include a special story or activity for children and the whole service should be over just after 9.30.

Second Sunday of the Month

Messy Church in Somersham from 4pm – 5.30pm.

You will find tables with different activities at the back of the church that connect to the theme e.g. Valentines or New Beginnings, Easter and Christmas.

We generally have a ‘community activity’ – e.g. a group collage, a science activity e.g. Fizzy hearts, Lego or building blocks, an edible craft e.g. decorating home made biscuits, a craft which might include painting or sticking. So hopefully, something for everyone. We welcome all ages including babies.

Work with Schools

Every fortnight, on a Monday afternoon, our Open the Book team with Rev. Sue attend assembly at Somersham Primary School and with the help of some of the pupils we act out a different story from the bible.  The school also visits the church at Christmas, Easter, Harvest and the end of the school year for an extra special time.

We also visit Whitehall School and both schools bring their pupils into church to support the RE curriculum. We have a special service at the end of the school year for the children, family and teachers.

Revd Sue and Eddie Howlett (our Church Warden) regularly hold a Loaves and Fishes lunchtime club at Somersham Primary School at 12.45 -1.15 where the children act out a bible story and complete a related craft.
