Roll of Honour – The Great War 100 Years On

roll (3 of 3)On the 4th August we dedicated a Candle of Reflection in St John’s Somersham in memory of all those who died in the first World War and created an area in the church where we can honour those associated with the village who gave their lives in order to make a better life for us today. We also undertook to remember each life on the Sunday following the 100th anniversary of their death.

Sunday 5th October marked the anniversary of the first soldier from Somersham to be remembered for his ultimate scacrifice.

Sunday 5th October: Private Alfred Wootten

roll (2 of 3)

roll (1 of 3)Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the life of Private Alfred Wootten who died from wounds on 1st October 1914 and we think of the life changing effect his death had on his mother Rebecca Wootten (nee Ruff), his wife Florence and their two children Alfred and Pamela who were 2 and 4 at the time.   Finally we pray for his descendants living today as they too reflect on his life,  given that we might be free.
